Missouri Summer

The leaves were long, the grass was green
The Queen Anne's Lace tall and fair
And in the glade a light was seen
Of a thousand fireflies shimmering

We crossed over a gate, walked along a high rocky ridge and down into a river vale, frightened a flock of deer, sat on an old railway bridge looking down at the river.

Nights like this I think I love Missouri too much to ever leave it.

Hi,

I have spent more than an hour reading through your blog, starting from before you went to Japan (don't know how I stumbled upon this blog though).

But anyway, had a few questions, was you Japanese good enough for your visit?
Are you still learning Japanese?
I know you said you liked Japan, but what was your favourite place??

I am asking because I have just got to the end of Rosetta Stone Jap level 1, and I am heading to Japan very soon.

Thanks!

Hello there! Thanks for stopping by.

I traveled with my friend Laura, who studied Japanese in school for a year. Since I learned mostly from Rosetta Stone, we knew different things, but about the same amount. We also carried a phrasebook. We often had the feeling that we knew JUST enough to manage. Sometimes one of us understood something and translated for the other, or vice versa. There were several times we really had to use Japanese. But, we also travelled to some pretty remote areas. In Tokyo, Kyoto, etc I'm sure it's easier to find English speakers.

I am not really actively learning Japanese right now, but I still enjoy it. I would like to go back to it at some point, maybe in preparation for a return trip to Japan.

My favorite parts of Japan were the more natural/rural areas. I really liked Kamakura and Nikko, both smaller cities/towns near Tokyo. I also loved Takayama (old town, waterfalls, mountains) and Miyajima, the island off of Hiroshima with the floating tori and the pretty Mt. Misen.

Where are you going in Japan?

Good luck!

Thank you very much for replying, greatly appreciated.

I am planning to go to spend a week in Tokyo and a week in Kyoto, because apparently those are the best places, well those are the most highly recommended places. I am also planning to buy a two week rail pass and intending to also check out Hiroshima and Mount Fuji too. Other than that I am just trying to find more places to go.

I will certainly take your recommendations on board when it comes to deciding where else to go.

I remember reading that you were learning a bit of Mandarin and also had some interest in Hindi, so just out of curiosity, how many languages have you learnt/learning?
